Good morning everyone. Today I am going to talk about something very important- ‘Why New Zealand needs more doctors’.

Doctors are very important people in our country. They help us when we are sick, they fix our broken bones, and they give us advice so we can stay healthy. Without doctors many people would not get the care they need.

However in New Zealand, we don’t have enough doctors. Sometimes people have to wait a long time to see a doctor nearby. In small towns like Kaitaia there are not enough doctors living there, so people have to travel far to get help. Do you have to travel to Whangarei or even Auckland to see the doctor?

Many doctors in New Zealand come from other countries. But a lot of them leave after a short time. Also not enough young people in New Zealand are training to become doctors. That’s a big problem. Maybe one day, you or I could be a doctor! Do you know why doctors leave and don’t stay? It is because their work is so busy they get stressed. In New Zealand, doctors’ salaries are less than what they earn in Australia. That’s why so many doctors move away from NZ.

When we have more doctors, sick people can get treatment faster and families in small towns can have a doctor nearby. Hospitals won’t be so busy and everyone can feel safer and healthier.

This way, we can have a stronger, happier and healthy community. Do you think we deserve to have a happier and healthy community? Well… I Do!

Doctors teach us how to stop sickness before it starts. With more doctors, we can learn more about eating healthy food, exercising, and taking care of our bodies. Do you think we should learn to stop sickness?
